Unwanted body hair can make you feel self-conscious and embarrassed about showing skin on your body in general. Hair removal methods, such as shaving or waxing, may address the problem, but they are a very temporary solution to an ongoing concern. Orlando Dermatology offers a more lasting solution: laser hair removal using the Candela Gentle YAG® laser system. F. Lateef, MD, of Orlando Dermatology, specifically chose the laser for its efficient, yet gentle methods of removing unwanted hair.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal involves exposing a hair follicle to an intense beam of light. The light and heat from the light destroys the hair follicle to prevent the follicle from growing new hair. Not all lasers are created equal, however.
Cosmetic lasers emit different wavelengths of light to target different hair and skin types. The Candela Gentle YAG® laser Dr. Lateef uses at his Orlando laser hair removal practice emits 1064 nanometers of wavelength. This means it is suitable for patients of all skin types and hair colors and textures. Other lasers do not offer the same abilities to treat even fine hairs or to minimize the likelihood the skin will discolor around the treated area.
Some hair follicles will never grow back and hair removal is permanent while others may grow back with time. Most patients find they need anywhere from three to six treatments for best results.
What Areas of the Body Does Laser Hair Removal Treat?
The Candela Gentle YAG® laser can work on virtually any area where you have unwanted hair. Examples include:
- Back Hair
- Bikini Area
- Chest Hair
- Chin Hair
- Facial Hair, such as above the lip
- Outer Ear Hair
What Is the Treatment Process for Laser Hair Removal Like?
Because your hair follicles are constantly in different stages of growth, laser hair removal can take multiple treatments to prove effective. Kim Sevold, Medical Esthetician, can work with you to establish a treatment routine for the best results possible.
If you currently wax or use electrolysis for hair removal, you must discontinue these processes for at least four weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. This keeps your hair follicles from progressing into a growth phase that keeps the laser from working at its best. Please contact Kim for Pre-Treatment instructions which are necessary prior to treatment.
The treatment’s duration depends upon the area treated. The laser is designed to deliver fast pulses, sometimes as quick as 3 milliseconds, to kill hair follicles.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Some discomfort is involved with laser hair removal, but the Candela Gentle YAG® employs state-of-the-art technology to cool the hair follicles after heating them to minimize pain and discomfort as much as possible. Each patient can have a different reaction to laser hair removal treatments. Some patients find the procedure is not painful at all while others may feel mild discomfort. The sensation has also been described as having mild sunburn.
